Le Bon Plaisir

About the content:

Henri de Régnier: Le Bon Plaisir

With 21 colour etchings by Silvain Sauvage Ex. No. 131 of 191 on Vélin de Rives

Les Éditions de la Roseraie, Paris 1929

Henri Régnier's multifaceted and subtle novel, first published in 1902, recalls the joyful and tragic hours of the ‘Grand Siècle’. The war and its excesses form the backdrop. There was a young lady in the Marais in Paris, gallant and well-built, who not only liked to show it, but also liked to let the chosen ones ‘feel’ it.

Régnier's fascination with times gone by goes beyond simple nostalgia.

About the artist: Louise Marot was a gifted student of Charles Chanat at the École Estienne, where she learnt the basics of her profession. She then perfected her skills with Petrus Ruban before opening her own studio in Paris in 1920 in collaboration with her daughter Suzanne Rodde, who successfully specialised in cover design. This happy partnership between mother and daughter resulted in highly acclaimed covers in the period style.

Unfortunately, only a limited number were produced, as the mother died in 1936. Marot-Rodde's covers are characterised by the quality of the leather, the precision of the bookbinding, the harmony of the colour tones and the interplay between the illustrations and the design.
