Artistic bookbinding Ascona

About the artist: Growing up as the son of a self-employed bookbinder in Thun, the well-trained artistic gymnast completed an apprenticeship as a bookbinder with Thorvald Henningsen at Napfgasse 4 in Zurich from 1960-63. After leaving recruit school, he decided to work with Martin Jaegle at the Legatoria Artistica opened by Joseph Stemmle in Ascona from 1965. He remained there until 1969, in between attending the Ecole Estienne in Paris in 1967. He earned his tuition fees with small jobs before and after school. He then studied and worked in Florence, southern France and at the École de la Cambre in Brussels before moving to Munich with his wife at the time, Mechthild Lobisch, and their daughter.

After a period as a househusband and separation, Peter Weiersmüller worked for 27 years as a teacher specialising in ‘experimental bookbinding’ at the adult education centre in Munich. He also created artist's books as well as multiples and movable art objects.
