Ex. No. 5 of 30 on Vélin pur fil Johannot,(870 copies on Vergé ivoire)

Editions Fata Morgana, Paris 1990 Lawrence Durell (1912-1990) was an Indo-British poet, humourist and travel writer. Born in Brussels, Henri Michaux (1899-1984) was a poet and painter who, after a difficult childhood, briefly studied medicine before signing on as a sailor and beginning to write in 1927. He moved to Paris, travelled extensively, wrote numerous books, painted successfully and was awarded the Grand National Prize for Literature in 1965. He is considered one of the great mavericks of 20th century art. His painting is influenced by Paul Klee and Max Ernst.

About the artist: Edgar Claes was born in Hamot, Belgium, in 1954 and began drawing lessons at the age of 12. At 16, he trained as a display and advertising artist. In 1976, at the age of 22, he joined the Order of the Crusaders in the monastery of St Agatha in Holland, where he developed a great passion for painting, sculpture and especially bookbinding. From 1990, he developed binding techniques with polycarbonate, which he worked on with a computer-aided milling machine and designed with an airbrush. He has been a member of the MDE for many years and is one of the most original binding artists of our time. He gives courses in Holland and elsewhere.
