With a woodcut ‘Dance of the Nymphs’ by Max Jacob

Ex. No. 7 of 30 copies, printed on papier Hollande de van Gelder, for Max Jacob by Paul Birault, Paris 1911, with a dedication by the author: Mademoiselle Elsa Davis qui a l'âme d'Elsa et la royauté de David

Ex-libris: Pierre Bergé The text La Côte is a collection of Celtic songs, a witty mockery of society, probably the most curious of Max Jacob's collections. The unusual preface is followed by 36 parody texts, mostly in prose. The edition is bilingual with the French text on the left and the Breton text on the right. Max Jacob lived from 1876 to 1944.

About the artist: Rose Adler attended the École d'Art décoratif in Paris, where she also learnt the craft of gilding. The school combined craftsmanship, culture, intelligence and sensitivity. Adler had a keen sense of colour and materials right from the start. In addition to furniture, she developed and designed remarkable covers, which soon attracted the attention of couturier and bibliophile Jacques Doucet. She was influenced and inspired by him and also by Pierre Legrain. She worked for Doucet until the end of her life. Adler lived in an artistic and avant-garde milieu. She constructed book decorations with architectural logic and rigour as well as sensitivity and grace. She possessed an inexhaustible imagination and employed the best craftsmen of the time to produce her creations. Adler was a member of the Union of Modern Artists and a founding member of the Société de la Reliure originale in 1946.
