Rudolf Borchardt: Childhood and youth

told by himself

Annual edition for the members of the Maximilian Society, printed in 1500 copies, Maximilian Society, Hamburg 1966 Rudolf Borchardt (1877-1945) was a German writer, poet, translator, cultural critic and committed speaker, author of one of the most complex works of German literature in the first half of the twentieth century.

He wrote his childhood memoirs on family, school, environment and society in 1927 and 1928 at the age of fifty.

About the artist: Martin Jaegle completed his bookbinding apprenticeship in Zurich from 1947-50, followed by his master craftsman's examination in 1960. After holding various positions, Thorvald Henningsen ‘brought’ him into his studio in the centre of Zurich's Niederdorf district in 1952, where he remained until 1962. He also took courses in gilding with Th. Henningsen and Morf, calligraphy with H. Meier and W. Wälchli, colour theory with Emil Mehr and drawing with Frühauf, Bärtschi and Fischer. In 1956/57 he deepened and perfected his knowledge and skills in hand gilding with Raymond Mondange at the École Estienne in Paris.
