Friedrich Schiller: Poems

Edited by Ernst Jenny

Birkhäuser thin print editions, Basel 1949 Friedrich Schiller (1759-1805) was a doctor, poet, philosopher and historian. He is considered one of the most important German playwrights, poets and essayists. His famous works include ‘Kabale und Liebe’ and ‘Maria Stuart’. Alongside Goethe, he is undisputedly the most important author of German classicism. He wrote over 900 poems in total.

About the artist: Martin Jaegle completed his bookbinding apprenticeship in Zurich from 1947-50, followed by his master craftsman's examination in 1960. After holding various positions, Thorvald Henningsen ‘brought’ him into his studio in the centre of Zurich's Niederdorf district in 1952, where he remained until 1962. He also took courses in gilding with Th. Henningsen and Morf, calligraphy with H. Meier and W. Wälchli, colour theory with Emil Mehr and drawing with Frühauf, Bärtschi and Fischer. In 1956/57 he deepened and perfected his knowledge and skills in hand gilding with Raymond Mondange at the École Estienne in Paris.
